A comprehensive guide to shipping container castors

Moving freight containers without the help of a crane or forklift is a challenging undertaking! But fortunately, NEVA's shipping container wheels come into the picture. With them, you can effortlessly move large and heavy containers from place to place. ISO shipping container wheels also enable manoeuvring in tight spaces.

What are shipping container wheels?

Cargo or ISO shipping container castors are heavy-duty wheel systems specially designed to mobilise shipping containers, tanks, equipment or structures with ISO 1161 corner pieces. The castors are usually equipped with polyurethane treads to carry the heavy loads, but moulded nylon or solid rubber tyres are also used, depending on the surface.

What is unique about shipping container wheels?

To attach a shipping container wheel to the ISO 1161 corner of an intermodal shipping container, the top plate of the caster is equipped with a twist-lock mechanism. This makes it possible to clamp and release the caster to the container. As shipping containers are used all over the world for shipping goods, caster systems must be robust and heavy-duty.

To which type of shipping container can castors be attached?

We can fit castors to any container according to the ISO 1161 standard; our standard shipping container caster castors fit the corner castings of standard 20- and 40-foot containers. If you have an irregular container, contact us and we will find a customised solution for you.

What applications are shipping container wheels used for?

The invention of the intermodal freight container is the biggest revolution in logistics. The standardisation of containers has optimised the handling and storage of cargo on ships and ashore. Today, most companies use shipping containers to transport bulk goods over long distances.

Our customers mainly use container wheels not for long-term long-distance transportation, but for various applications such as storage or as a temporary mobile unit for equipment.

The high-quality wheels offered at affordable prices make wheels.co.uk an excellent choice for buying shipping container wheels without exceeding your budget.

What is the "pull bar" in the container mobilisation package?

A tow bar allows you to connect the shipping container on wheels to a tractor, tractor or forklift, allowing you to move the container directly. Pull rods are collapsible and offer you an efficient way to pull or push the container to the right location.

How do you place a shipping container on wheels?

Placing shipping containers on wheels may sound like a tricky process, but it is not as difficult as it sounds - watch the video below.

  1. Make sure the surface and planned path are flat and free of obstacles.
  2. Lift the container using container jacks, a forklift or a crane.
  3. Our shipping container wheels fit any ISO 1161 corner castings.
  4. Insert them into the container's corner casting from below. And secure them with the twist-lock system.

Bear in mind that the load of a container may not be evenly distributed over all 4 wheels in case of:

  • An uneven loading of the container
  • An uneven surface
  • Obstacles or thresholds on the surface

As a safety measure, we recommend that you check the loading of the container and consult a qualified engineer if in doubt about the required load capacity. When transporting the container, stay at least 2 metres away when the container is moving. Do not go under the container under any circumstances.

The complete installation process of heavy-duty shipping container castors takes only a few minutes per caster to complete. And once you are done with the full installation process, you can move the container effortlessly.

Are there wheels for tiny houses?

With all the industrial uses of shipping containers, there is another creative way to use them! Shipping containers can also be used to make tiny houses. Most people who like to build tiny houses use two to three freight containers to build one. The sturdiness, availability and modern look of shipping containers make them easy to customise.

How do you use the direction fixing sea container casters?

The sea container swivel casters come with a special directional fastener that can be ideal in many applications. One important point to note is that fixing the direction of one of the rear wheels will give the shipping container a more stable ride.

For this to work, the alignment of the caster must be aligned with the direction of the fixed caster wheels. So by using a directional lock, you can effortlessly stop the horizontal swivel rotation of the wheel and convert it into a fixed, fixed caster.

How much load can ISO shipping container castors support?

Keep in mind that uneven surfaces and rough terrain increase the peak load on a single wheel. To calculate the required load capacity, we recommend dividing the total weight of the load + the weight of the container by a factor of 2.5.

Sample calculation:

Weight sea container 800 KG + load in the sea container 9000 KG = total weight 9800 KG

9800 / 2.5 = 3920 KG required load capacity per container swivel castor.

Container caster wheels are a good option for an easy way to transport shipping containers. We have the offered sea container casters in stock and can be delivered immediately. If you need a specific solution, advice or information, please contact us. We will be happy to help you!
